They call me C. B. Anthony. That’s the pen name of the late great Carl A. Battaglia. No, he’s not dead, just late – very, very late – in his writing career. Thirty years, to be exact.
If Battaglia knows anything, it’s about being allergic. He survived his early years because his physician father saved him many times throughout his childhood. Luckily, his woeful ensuing experiences gave him ample comic material for his second novel, Allergic: A Teenage Tale.
Adolescence spun Battaglia around in a serious philosophical and religious direction, driven by excessive amounts of Kierkegaard and Dostoevsky. Also, an obsession with God and spirituality drove him into a Jesuit novitiate for a full year. Some say these times inspired his first novel, Angel Wings: A Modern Fairy Tale.
In college, Battaglia developed a lifelong love of literature. Stories engulfed him. This led him to earn a master’s degree in English literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
In subsequent years, Battaglia had various careers, including one as a TV producer-director at the PBS station in Madison, Wisconsin, where he produced and directed national and international programs, one being the English version of the acclaimed Japanese animated series, Astro Boy. Strangely, it was a bigger hit in Australia than it was in the United States.
After a successful television career, Battaglia decided to chuck it all and try to make it as a Hollywood screenwriter. While writing every day, he supported himself as a story analyst for International Creative Management and Corsair Pictures. As it turned out, Battaglia showed little interest in commercial writing. His speculative scripts centered on the lives of Abraham Lincoln and Herman Melville, hardly blockbuster features.
However, if six years in LA taught Battaglia anything, it was his passion for writing. And armed with that discovery, he went back to Madison and earned a doctorate in English Composition and Rhetoric. Happily, he taught college writing, literature, and film in Madison and Green Bay for over twenty-five years.
Battaglia is now retired. And under the pen name of C. B. Anthony, he continues his writing odyssey.
